In response to this message, which has gone viral in several countries across Latin America and the Caribbean, <\/span><b>AHF Latin America &amp; Caribbean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finds it necessary to publicly clarify that this information is <\/span><b>false<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>entirely lacking in scientific basis<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which provides free sexual health services in more than a dozen countries throughout the region, reminds the public that <\/span><b>HIV is not transmitted through food<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nor by contact with objects, surfaces, or minor wounds exposed to the environment. The virus that causes HIV requires very specific conditions for transmission and <\/span><b>does not survive outside the human body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> long enough to pose a risk under such circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, there have been reports of an alleged <\/span><b>\u201cAIDS outbreak\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spreading on social media. This expression is both inaccurate and alarmist. It is important to clarify that <\/span><b>AIDS is not a contagious disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can suddenly spread like the flu or a respiratory virus. <\/span><b>AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an advanced stage of HIV infection that only occurs when a person has not had access to <\/span><b>testing and treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over an extended period. Today, with the availability of antiretroviral treatment, many people living with HIV <\/span><b>never go on to develop AIDS<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>There is no such thing as a spontaneous \u201cAIDS outbreak.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These claims, aside from being scientifically inaccurate, <\/span><b>fuel misinformation, reinforce stigma against people living with HIV, and hinder real prevention efforts.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>How is HIV actually transmitted?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HIV is only transmitted in specific situations, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sexual intercourse without a condom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sharing needles or sharp instruments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding (without treatment)\r\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unscreened or unsafe blood transfusions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Direct contact between mucous membranes or open wounds and the bodily fluids of a person living with HIV<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>HIV is not transmitted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through hugs, kisses, sharing cups or utensils, or casual contact with others, including handshakes, coughs, or tears.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>The importance of accurate information and knowing your HIV status<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misinformation about HIV is <\/span><b>never harmless<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It spreads quickly, creates fear, rejection, and stigma. That is why <\/span><b>AHF urges the public to rely on trustworthy sources, speak to healthcare professionals, and\u2014above all\u2014get tested to know their HIV status.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>correct use of condoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remains the most accessible, effective, and simple tool for preventing HIV transmission.
